Choosing a Wig for Your Face Shape
Find out what looks best on you!
IDENTIFYING YOUR FACE SHAPE
Before selecting a wig, it’s important to fully understand your face shape. While everyone’s face is a little different, the majority of people will fall into one of the categories below. To uncover your face shape, head to your bathroom with a dry erase marker. Stand in front of the mirror and trace the outline of your face, starting at your hairline, down past your cheekbones, and towards your chin. After, step back and choose the shape that best matches your mirror outline. Check out the listings below to get started.
OVAL
Best characterized as long and lean, oval faces are the most versatile for cuts and styling. Distinct features include an even width between chin and forehead as well as a smooth transition between cheeks and chin. Get some inspiration here.
Best hairstyle: Long waves, cropped near shoulders, side-swept bangs, middle parts, grown-out pixie cuts
Celebrities: Megan Fox, Ashley Graham, Blake Lively, Julianne Moore
SQUARE
When identifying a square face, notice if your lines are wider than they are tall. Square faces are characterized by a sharp jawline, but can sometimes have rounded edges. Look for noticeable angles in your face, cheekbones, and brows. Get some inspiration here.
Best hairstyles: Long, straight bobs, long layers, collarbone cuts, curly or natural “bed head” styles
Celebrities: Gwyneth Paltrow, Natalie Portman, Mo’Nique, and Olivia Wilde
ROUND
With a round face, search for even lines across your forehead, cheeks, and chin. Often characterized with full cheeks, round faces thrive with updos, jawline bobs, and other blunt hairstyles that compliment smooth lines. Get some inspiration here.
Best hairstyles: topknot, straight cut bobs, straight and big bangs, half up styles, low updos
Celebrities: Chrissy Teigen, Selena Gomez, Kaley Cuoco, and Hayden Panettiere
TRIANGLE
Think of the point of the triangle as your forehead. Triangle (or pear) face shapes are characterized by cheeks and chin that are wider than the forehead. Your face is also longer than it is wide and often, your jawline is the widest portion of your face. Get some inspiration here.
Best hairstyles: Short, pixie cut styles, waves past your jawline, long bangs and updos
Celebrities: Kelly Osbourne and Victoria Beckham
HEART
Sometimes called the “inverted triangle” heart-shaped faces are wider at the forehead and narrow at the chin. You’ll notice your cheeks are fuller near the top of your face before coming to a point. Your chin might be small and well-cut. Get some inspiration here.
Best hairstyles: Classic bob, side-swept bangs, chin-length and collar-bone cuts, and loose waves
Celebrities: Khloe Kardashian, Reese Witherspoon, Katie Holmes, and Jennifer Love Hewitt
DIAMOND
If your chin and forehead are about the same width and your cheekbones sit high, your face shape is diamond. Cheekbones are the widest portion of your face and balance the symmetry between your chin and forehead. Your facial bone structure is often a great asset when choosing your hairstyle. Best hairstyles: Side swept or pinned, long waves, lob, side parts, slick updos and tight buns.
